We are corporeal vessels, containing our histories within us like a collection of embedded, overlapping memories. We are the sum of these translucent layers, like an onion skin. The surface is the present moment. Digging through the layers we delve into our pasts. What do we reveal about ourselves on the surface? What is concealed beneath the crust?
Working with saved id cards, my self-portraits began as photographs taken by institutions for identification. After producing multiples, I built up recurring, translucent layers of the photos to remove their original intent and re-purpose them with new interpretations.
